A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. It’s a well worn cliche, but it’s an important one to bear in mind when you’re thinking about the security of your corporate network. That’s because if there’s a single point on your network’s perimeter defense that is weak, then that’s the place from which hackers will choose to launch their attack.
Network administrators put a great deal of effort and resources into promoting security with firewalls, virus scanners and many other measures, while data centers are turned into fortresses and networked PCs in corporate offices are guarded by 24-hour security systems.

The number of people working out of their homes has jumped 40% in the past two years, largely spurred on by better technology and horrifying commuting traffic.
Teleworkers are a booming part of the American workforce. In 1997, there were 11.6 million Americans employed by a company but working from home. Today that number has hit 23.5 million, according to research from the Dieringer Research Group, which compiled the 2003 American Interactive Consumer Survey. The ITAC, or International Telework Association and Council, revealed the study.

You too can outfit a home office for telecommuting and conducting business. Americans are leaving the corporate mothership in droves. At last count, more than one in five of the nation’s workers engaged in some form of telework on either a full- or part-time basis. A 2001 survey by the International Telework Association and Council (ITAC) also showed that a majority of teleworkers said they were more satisfied with their jobs, more productive than their peers, and felt more loyal to their employers than ever before. Nice work if you can get it, eh?
In fact, there’s never been a better time to approach your boss about telecommuting. “We’re starting to see more and more positions becoming teleworkable,” says ITAC president Tim Kane. Thanks to Internet and phone technology advances, working from home is both increasingly viable and affordable. Some companies favor telework as a way to cut down on overhead expenses such as office real estate. Some cities promote telework as a way of reducing pollution and rush-hour traffic.

Technology and Teleworker
Filed under Business, TeleworkerIn 2000, Congress enacted a law designed to establish telework policies. The law was intended to promote flexibility, reduce physical office space requirements and make jobs more appealing to candidates. A secondary reason for telework policies was to guard against a pandemic outbreak, terrorist attack or any other disasters. Since 2000, the rise in the number of laptops, broadband and Wi-Fi connections in homes, Webmail accounts for e-mail, and Web portals for remote access have made telecommuting more convenient and feasible than ever.
